A draw seems likely in the first Test between Bangladesh and Pakistan after a glut of runs on day four in Khulna.
The tourists were finally dismissed for 628 in their first innings at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium shortly before lunch.
That gave them a first innings lead of 296, but the hosts had almost wiped that out by stumps, reaching 273 without loss in their second innings.
Resuming on 537 for five, Pakistan scored at four-and-a-half runs per over in the morning session.
Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed both resumed on 51 but fell for 83 and 82 respectively.
Asad Shafiq 83 off 158 balls, Sarfraz Ahmed 82 off 88 balls. Which is more effective?
Taijul Islam polished off the tail, taking three wickets, as the slow left-armer finished with figures of six for 163.
However, Pakistan’s bid to exert pressure on the hosts and force a victory were scuppered by openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes who built a historic partnership.
1 – Imrul Kayes and Tamim Iqbal have set a new record Test opening partnership for Bangladesh (235*), passing their own mark of 224. Base.
Tamim was 138 not out at the close with Kayes unbeaten on 132.
Tamim Iqbal has become the first ever Bangladesh player to score hundreds in three consecutive Test matches – congratulations!! #BANvPAK
Tamim’s seventh Test century came up off only 123 balls and featured 11 boundaries and three sixes. Kayes was slightly more circumspect, but his third Test ton arrived from 153 balls.
As well as securing the draw on the final day, the pair will know they are on the brink of more milestones with just a dozen 300-run opening partnerships in the history of Test cricket.
