In the opening match of the 2022 AFF Championship, Cambodia will play the Philippines at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh on Tuesday, December 20. With Thailand, Indonesia, and Brunei also in the group, the Angkor Warriors face another difficult path to the knockout stages. They have never made it past the group stage of the competition. They’ve lost four of their last five games, going winless.
After losing in the third round, Cambodia failed to qualify for the Asia Cup for the first time since 1972, scoring just one point in three games. Their hopes of progressing were dashed by consecutive defeats to India and Hong Kong, but they were able to salvage some pride by earning a goalless draw in their final match against Afghanistan.
The Philippines, on the other hand, finished second to Palestine in their group with four points from three games and did not advance to the continental championship in Qatar the following year. The Street Dogs have played in two friendlies since then, winning one and losing the other. They will now attempt to make amends in the ASEAN tournament. Their most recent appearance in the semifinals came in 2018.

Cambodia, which is ranked 44 places lower than the Philippines and has had a better year than the Philippines, has an excellent record against the Philippines. The Street Dogs should come out on top in this one.

The Philippines has won three of the six battles it has fought. The Philippines have only lost to Cambodia once, in December of this year’s AFF Championship, by a score of 1-0. Philippines and Cambodia last met in a cordial in November 2014, where the Road Canines won 3-0.
In their last five games, the visitors have lost two and won only two. This year, Cambodia has only won one of their six games, a 2-1 victory over Timor-Leste. The Angkor Warriors lost four of their next five games and drew once since then.
