India will commence their Asia Cup title defence on August 28 in a high-voltage clash with Pakistan in Dubai. The tournament, Asia Cup 2022, will kick off a day before, on August 27, with Sri Lanka, the designated hosts, taking on Afghanistan in Dubai.
Yes, Sri Lanka are the official host of the Asia Cup 2022 even though the tournament will happen in Dubai and Sharjah. This is because the competition was slated to take place in Sri Lanka initially before, in July, it was decided to move it to the UAE.
Sri Lanka is going through one of its worst economic and political crises with supplies of food and fuel drying up.
They have still been able to host bilateral cricket – Australia and Pakistan toured the country for bilateral matches in recent months – however, with the Asia Cup being a multi-team tournament – six teams will participate in the main tournament – the challenges of hosting six teams amid an upheaval would have been too much for the island nation.
Regarding this, the SLC chief executive officer Ashley de Silva had told ESPNcricinfo: “Hosting two teams is not the same as hosting ten teams. You have to provide ten buses with fuel for all of them. You have to give every team a luggage van with fuel, and transport for the managers. You also have to give the sponsors transport and ensure that they are getting the mileage that they want from their sponsorship. The fuel for the generators to run the floodlights will also have to be found.”
Looking at the situation in Sri Lanka, the Asian Cricket Council, headed by Jay Shah, the BCCI Secretary, eventually decided to move the tournament out of Sri Lanka. India and Pakistan were ruled out as hosts because of the political tension between the two countries, and also because its monsoon season in the two countries.
Bangladesh, who hosted the 2016 Asia Cup, was another possibility, but the ACC turned to the UAE, which hosted the 2018 Asia Cup, and also leagues such as the IPL and PSL in recent years.
“Every effort was made to host the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and the decision to shift the venue to the UAE was taken after much deliberation. The UAE will be the new venue while Sri Lanka will continue to retain hosting rights,” said Jay Shah, the Asian Cricket Council President.
