England defeated Pakistan by 74 runs in the first Test in Rawalpindi on the final day of the Test match. This is England’s first tour to Pakistan since 2005 and they are leading the Test series 1-0. Before the T20 World Cup England won a T20I series 4-3 against the Men in Green.
The visitors set Pakistan a target of 343 after declaring their second innings on 264/7 on day 4. England scored at 6.50 runs per over in the first innings. In the second innings, they raised the scoring rate at 7.36 with clear intentions of winning the Test match. Half-centuries from Zak Crawley, Joe Root, and Harry Brook took them to that score with Root especially playing some unorthodox shots.

Pakistan resumed their second innings on day 5 at 80/2 needing another 263 runs to win on day 5. Ollie Robinson and the veteran James Anderson picked up four wickets each. Ben Stokes and Jack Leach picked one each as England registered their first Test win on Pakistan soil in 22 years.

Twitter acknowledged England’s feat of defeating Pakistan on their home soil and congratulated the visitors on winning the first Test. This is how Twitter reacted to England’s famous Test win.
Regardless of whether you buy into their philosophy or not, you just feel like England winning today in Rawalpindi could well have a significant impact on the future of how Test cricket is played & more importantly on how Test wins are conceived on benign pitches #PakvEng

Amazing performance by England! It was their sheer self belief and all out aggressive strategy that won them the match. Big credit to Stokes and McCullum. Pakistan have a lot of thinking to do!

England showing how to play in Pakistan. Take the game by the scruff of the neck with aggressive batting and declarations. #PAKvENG #Cricket

Sensational win for England. They deserve every bit of it because they got it while not worrying about a loss. Brilliant Test win #PAKvENG

Incredible result for England in Pindi. What an inspiring, able and savvy leader they’ve found in Ben Stokes. Bazball’s batting style aside – Stokes’s captaincy, field settings, long spells post lunch was just brilliant. #ENGvPAK

Essentially, England have taken a game on a pitch designed for a dull batting draw and converted it into a thrilling test match. I am in awe of how England are playing test cricket
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) December 5, 2022

Wow…wow…wow. Well played, England. A victory of not just the skills but also, the intent to win. Even if it’s at the cost of losing. Whatever mind can conceive…it can achieve.
Test Cricket is ❤️ #PakvEng

Incredible display of positive attitude gave England this win against Pakistan 👏 #ENGvPAK

This pitch produced a result only cos Eng made 650 in 100 overs and declared potentially risking a loss. Well played England, well led @benstokes38 @englandcricket 👏🏽 #PAKvENG pic.twitter.com/pWbAH7vhWh

None of the Pakistan batters could withstand the pressure of chase in the second innings. Skipper Babar scored just four in the second innings. Saud Shakeel top-scored with 76 off 159 deliveries. Three Pakistan batters scored more than 40 while all-rounder Agha Salman scored 30.
Earlier in the game, England scored at 6.50 runs per over in the first innings to put up a mammoth 657. Centuries from Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Joe Root, and Harry Brook took them to that score with Root especially playing some unorthodox shots.
Pakistan in response scored 579 runs themselves with three batters including Babar scoring centuries in the first innings. The Rawalpindi garnered a lot of criticism as there was no assistance for bowlers from both teams in the first innings. As the pitch started wearing down, the England bowlers led by Anderson made the best use of reverse swing to pick up wickets in the second innings.
The second PAK vs ENG Test match will be played in Multan (Dec 9-13) followed by the third and final Test in Karachi (Dec 17-21).
